FAIRER (Females Actively Involved in Rewarding Engineering Roles)

Written by  Ms Joanne Crowther

FAIRER is the first women’s engineering society at the University of Bradford and was set up in 2002. FAIRER is open to all female students and staff in the School of Engineering, Design & Technology and offers support by providng a social network for students and staff in the School.

The society organises a varied programme of activities throughout the academic year including “Fun in the Forrest” a teambuilding event where the women go out to a local forest, ride around in a 6 wheel amphibious landing vehicle, and have a go at “Tree Balancing”, Orienteering, navigate their way across an assault course and take part in games to test their communication and teambuilding skills.

Network lunches and social events also take place for members, together with guest speakers and visits to the local Pizzeria. The Society also disseminates useful information to its members such as announcements regarding special grants, awards and prizes for women.

Over the last ten years, the School has worked proactively to encourage women into Engineering, Design and Technology with schemes such as WISE (Women into Science and Engineering) and GETSET (Girls Entering Tomorrow’s Science, Engineering and Technology).
